Design-Build for Dahlgreen Courts
E-Landscape has been selected to provide design-build services for the development of Dahlgreen Courts, an affordable housing development in Washington, DC. Developed by Mission First Housing Development Corporation (MFHDC), the Dahlgreen Courts project included the preservation of 96 units of affordable housing and the substantial rehabilitation of two historic buildings in the Brookland neighborhood. Designed by architects Weincek & Associates and built by Hamel Builders, Dahlgreen Courts is intended to qualify for Enterprise Green Communities.
An ideal location for affordable housing, Dahlgreen Courts is two blocks from the red line Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station, and one block from the major thoroughfare of Rhode Island Avenue. Originally built in the 1920’s to provide affordable housing for federal government workers, the two buildings are in need of rehabilitation. In 2009, the tenants received notice that the property was under contract to sell. Under the District’s Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act, the tenants had the right to match the contract price. With legal counsel from the Harrison Institute at the Georgetown University Law Center, the tenants formed the Dahlgreen Courts Tenant Association (DCTA) and entered into a contract to purchase the building. The property has since been transferred to MFHDC and construction is nearing completion.
Our work on the landscape design for Dahlgreen Courts is now complete and installation is set to begin shortly. Stay tuned for photos and updates!
